Drum Sander Belt Sizes: EZ-8 vs Hummel
Width is not the size
Two machines both sold as roughly 8-inch drum sanders take different belts. Order the length and the width the manual prints for that drum. A belt that is close will not track, or it will not go on at all.
| Machine | Abrasive the manual specifies | Where it is printed |
|---|---|---|
| American Sanders EZ-8, expandable drum | 8 in × 19 in belt (sleeve) | EZ-8 spec sheet and the EZ-8 operator manual |
| Lägler HUMMEL | 200 × 750 mm belt (about 7.9 × 29.5 in) | Lägler HUMMEL specifications |
Those two belts are not substitutes. The Hummel belt is about ten inches longer than the EZ-8 sleeve.
American Sanders EZ-8
The current EZ-8 product sheet lists sandpaper size for the expandable drum as an 8 inch by 19 inch belt. The operator manual lists the same 8 inch by 19 inch sleeve on the EZ-8 models in its specification table, including 07058A.
That figure is the expandable drum. American Sanders also sold the EZ-8 with a clamp drum. A clamp drum holds a sheet under a bar. It does not take the expandable sleeve. If the machine in front of you has a clamp bar, do not order the 8 by 19 sleeve against this table. Read the drum type on the machine or in the manual for that serial, then order the abrasive that drum uses.
The sheet also lists a contact drum of 8 inches. Drum diameter is not the belt length. The 19 inches is the sleeve length the expandable drum needs.
Lägler HUMMEL
Lägler’s current HUMMEL specification lists the sanding belt as 200 by 750 mm, about 7.9 by 29.5 inches. Drum width is 200 mm. That page is the size to order against.
A reseller that labels a Hummel belt “8 inch” is rounding the width. The length is still 750 mm. An EZ-8 8 by 19 sleeve is the wrong length. A Hummel belt is the wrong length for an EZ-8 expandable drum.
Grit choice is the floor, not the belt length. The cut sequence is on sanding belt grit sequence.
What else has to match
- The splice. A heavy splice can print a line across the floor every revolution. The right length does not fix a bad joint.
- The backing. Cloth belts take the heat of a coarse cut better than a light paper sheet. The EZ-8 sleeve and the Hummel belt are both cloth belts. A paper sheet belongs on a clamp drum or an edger, not on these two drums.
- Tension. A belt that is the right size and is under-tensioned slips and burns. Follow the machine’s belt-change steps. Do not force a short belt on with the tensioner.
The edger is a different abrasive. An edger disc does not go on either of these drums. The Super 7R manuals print two different size lines, by model, on Super 7R disc size.
Shop the machine, not “8 inch sanding belts”
8 by 19 inch EZ-8 drum sander belts
200 by 750 mm Hummel sanding belts
Buy the row that matches the machine. Read the length on the listing. “8 inch drum belt” without a length is how the two sizes get mixed.

FAQ
Will an 8 by 19 inch belt fit a Lägler Hummel?
No. Lägler specifies a 200 by 750 mm belt, about 7.9 by 29.5 inches. An 8 by 19 inch EZ-8 sleeve is a different length and will not run on a Hummel.
Does every American Sanders EZ-8 use an 8 by 19 inch belt?
The expandable-drum models do. American Sanders lists an 8 by 19 inch sleeve for those models. A clamp drum takes a sheet, not that sleeve. Confirm the drum on the machine before you order.
Does the right belt size pick the grit?
No. Size gets the belt onto the drum. Grit is the cut. Use the grit sequence for the floor, with a belt in the size the manual names.
